Couples

Managing intimate relationships has never been easy, but it is even more difficult today. One sign of this is the dramatic number of marriages that end in divorce. Unfortunately, most couples who are experiencing difficulties do not seek counseling until their relationship is in a full-blown crisis—when it may be too late to repair the damage that has been done.

Our approach is to work with couples as early on as possible in the relationship, so as to help them develop the knowledge and skills to deal with problems before they become crises. Marriage and other intimate relationships are difficult, so it is not unusual for issues to arise in such areas as personality differences, personal habits, children and parenting, family and friends, finances, sexuality, leisure activities, and spirituality. Our view is that seeking professional help should be viewed as a sign of the strength of the relationship—not as a sign of failure.

For couples about to be married, we use the PREPARE assessment tool, and for couples who are already married we use the ENRICH instrument. PREPARE and ENRICH, which have been used by millions of couples over the past 30 years, help identify a couple’s strength and growth areas. Using the assessment results, we work with the couple to:

  • Explore strength and growth areas
  • Strengthen communication skills
  • Identify and manage major stressors
  • Learn techniques to resolve conflict
  • Develop a more balanced relationship
  • Explore family of origin issues
  • Understand and appreciate personality differences

In addition to being trained in the use of PREPARE and ENRICH, Tom has completed Level I Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy and uses this approach in his work.

Working together as co-therapists, Tom and Lorena offer a reassuring, calming presence for couples who have the desire and motivation to explore their relationship issues.  Particularly because men are often uncomfortable or apprehensive about counseling, Tom can provide reassurance and support that the male perspective will be understood and acknowledged throughout the process.  Lorena works effectively and compassionately with women, providing an empathetic ear while ensuring that the woman's voice is heard and her needs are met.
